Thanks for checking out my studio! I founded Rough Luck a few years back, choosing the name as a nod to the Rough Luxe design movement. I build every piece personally by hand in my NYC studio, and I take a lot of pride in my work.
My journey as a maker started many years ago. I moved to New York to be a professional actor (which I still am; I spend my evenings acting in a play off-Broadway). One of my first survival jobs was as an assistant to a scenic designer. I remember being new to this giant city, feeling unsure and often overwhelmed, and finding solace in the scenery shop. I felt comforted by the smell of paint thinner and sawdust, and I loved getting lost in whatever the task was at hand. I learned so much from that job, and from the many design jobs that followed.
From that original spark of comfort and curiosity comes this studio. It is definitely a modest endeavor, and I am incredibly grateful to the hundreds of strangers that have bought from me in these first few years.
Please have a look around, and drop me a line if you have any questions. My email address is matt [!at] roughluckstudio.com. I'd love to hear from you.
